have a full paper towell roll soaking in oil in a can as ive posted before. 4 half sheets folded, lit, and shoved in the lower vent. 5 minutes later its 400 degrees and ready

looks different than lighting on top but the bad smoke was gone very quickly

I might have to try this. The starter cubes are taking way too long to get my XL up to temp.

if you stack a few towels drizzle oil, stack some more, drizzle some more,repeat. then let them sit a week they light really easy with a big flame, better than doing it the day you light the egg

The new electric starter I just bought is so simple I cant imagine wanting to try something else. Stick it down in the coals, plug it in, and in 10 minutes your ready to go. I usually on leave it in about 5-6 minues.
