I have never used any wood for extra flavor but I bought some apple this week. Got some chicken going on the LBGE later today. Does the apple wood overwhelm as my wife is not too crazy about much smoke flavor but thinking the apple may be OK? Thanks for any replies as I would also like to try this on ribs if chicken goes OK.

Apple is rather mild but I never used it on Chicken before. I maily use it on pork. If you've been using hickory or mesquite ans she found it over powering, apple might be good for her.

Thanks - I will let you know how the chicken goes......

Apple is pretty subtle, but delicious. I'd use sparingly on chicken as poultry picks up smoke flavor very easily compared to other meats.Mark Annville, PA

Cort is dead nuts, Not enough smoke is better than too much.

i put half a bag on a turkey yesterday, apple is mild. go with just a handful on your first cook. look into buying guava wood online from guava farms in hawaii, its way way mild but does add to the cook. make sure your fire is burning clean and add the small amount of chips, if you dont your wife will blame it on the smoking wood and it was really lump not burning clean
fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it -
I always use apple chunks for ribs.

I've used apple, cherry, hickory, oak, and mesquite on chicken. It just depends on the flavor I want to add to the seasoning I put on the chicken. If I using a sweet type seasoning then I favor the apple or cherry. Other seasoning I use the other woods for flavor affect. The amount of smoke can really add to your seasoning or conflict. Last night I used apple wood for the first time to smoke a meatloaf where I usually use mesquite or oak. The apple really added a nice flavor. Successful experiment. Other time you can tell the diffierent flavors woods add.

That's a keeper!My actuary says I'm dead. -
My wife feels the same way about smoke flavor. Give pecan a try. Very mild and great tasting. You won't be disappointed.

Not sure I'd describe mesquite as "sweeter and more delicate than hickory."
