To anyone who is a native of the NorthWest, the premier meal always includes the revered Dungeness Crab (Cancer magister) (named after the town of Dungeness, and/or Dungeness Spit), where the first commercial harvesting of the crab was done.[p]Today, in the fishing area local to most Puget Sound dwellers, was the first day of crab season. We limited![p]I haven't yet figured out how to approach this with the egg; around here it's boiled (live), served cracked with butter. Fresh & live going into the pot! Yum... the kids can't wait for dinner.[p]<img src= "http://home.comcast.net/~deaston0/images/050701dung1.jpg">

HolySmokes,[p]We're moved to Whidbey four years ago from Calif and altho I know a lot of people here do the crab thing, we never have. I'd like to but have no idea how to go about it or where to go, etc. We're going to some friends on Sunday who live on the beach and I believe they go crabbing, so maybe I'll ask for a lesson! I do love to eat the stuff, that's for sure. Esp crab cakes. Yum! I bet crab cakes would fry up nice on the egg.

HolySmokes,[p]Check out the posted recipes for high temp shrimp and squid in the "submitted recipes" portion of the forum -- I bet crab could be done the same way, then chilled and cracked -- the smoke will get into the meat slightly -- [p]wow, that sounds good.

Oh Gwen,
I can see a few more years away from lala-land is in order.[p]yes, ask your friends about crabbing. It's not something you do from the shore.[p]no, do NOT under any circumstances mention anything to do with 'cakes' in relationship to crab in the Northwest. That's making hamburger out of the best steak you can buy.[p]Maybe, maybe you could get away with it if you had rock crab or imported crab, but no Northwesterner worth his salt would do anything with a dungeness other than cook, crack, and eat it; possibly with lemon and butter.

HolySmokes,[p]
Hang on there...Gwen.....I am in Annapolis almost every weekend and go crabbing from the docks all the time. Little chicken neck, string, and a weight and it's "Crab on"...Granted dugeness Crabs are trapped at sea and as I recall considered to be the most dangerous occupation hazard out there....but to me the best crabs in the world...BLUES...can be caught by anyone from any shore in the East....gotta move east Gwenn!!....[p]

BYC39,[p]Nothin' against blue crabs. I like Maryland crab, when I'm in Maryland! And you can crab for some types of crab from the docks around here, too; mostly rock crab. Kinda second rate when you've got dungeness available though.[p]The dangerous occupation crabs are Alaskan dungeness, King, snow crab, etc., fished in the Bering Sea. Not a Puget Sound hazard, thanks, though many of those boats harbor here during the off-season.[p]HS
