I thought the fire ring provided additional protection and insulation from the intense heat .I would question wether just the ceramic of the egg without the fire ring would be rated to the temperatures you are subjecting it to. If you crack the lower half of the egg you may find out it's not covered because of improper use. ???Overland Park, Kansas

I could put the fire ring back in I suppose.

Do I need to put the fire ring back in?

I see what you have done in pic. bunched the coal to one side. This maybe bad as it will create a hot spot. Me thinks if you had it more towards the center, it would be a go. Place the steaks right over the coals.
Maybe you are just showing the grate fit.

I think it will be fine. The ceramic was probably fired at around 3000 degrees. It came out of the kiln alright.Mark Annville, PA

Your fine with the ring out. I have measured the temp of the outside of the dome on my mini at almost 600 when doing pizzas. i used to take the ring out on my small and drop the grate on the firebox to save lump and never had an issue.

good idea, but that grate won't last that long with super high temp cooks, my weber grills all are bowed and rusted where they're over the coals, just a heads up
