Modified Original Fire Grate

After modifying the original plate by enlarging the holes to 3/4" and about 6 cooks later I can say it was a success. I am getting more consistent temps and faster start times. I had to re-learn the draft door and daisy wheel combinations, but it was not that difficult. No out of pocket expense!

Drilled out the small firebox with more holes, and expanded the lower vent opening

Taz,The drill is a high speed steel 3/4" diameter drill run at about 150 rpm on the drill press. You do not need to use any oil or lubricants to cut cast iron at this speed. It is difficult to do using a hand held drill. The drill press was safer and much easier to control.Simple ingredients, amazing results!
