New to the forum.  Have been reading up on how to cook a Butt overnight.  Gonna try tonight.  Wish me luck.
I have a question about Charcoal.  My local Egg dealer sells the BGE Charcoal for about $24 for a 20lb bag.  They also sell Cowboy branded lump charcoal for about $10 per bag cheaper.  Is there any substantial difference in the quality of BGE vs. the Other Brand?

Thanks

Its cheaper for a reason, others will tell you different.  Ozark Oak is my favorite.  Check the Whiz' site for reviews.

Royal Oak makes the BGE lump, so check your local WalMart for Royal Oak (look for the 'made in USA') on the label.  Read trhe reviews at  the site danv23 posted.

Last time I was in Wall-Mart Royal Oak was about $7.00 for ten pounds. Watch out for imported Royal Oak, some have cautioned against using it. Bag says made in US on it if not import.

Royal oak has been great for me, and I've had a lot more larger chunks than the bge lump so far believe it or not. And for half the price.

The various foreign sourced Royal Oak bags actually ranged in quality.  I gave them different ratings from recommended down to below average.  The Brazil and Argentina weren't bad.  Paraguay was not too good.

Local dealer ran out of BGE, picked up some Cowboy at Bass Pro shops.   Was not a fan of it.   Got some Wicked Good yesterday - used it last night - liked it alot.

Wanting to try the Ozark Oak in the future.

Tried Cowboy and Wicked Good recently. Cowboy was OK, WG was very good but way too expensive $27/22lbs. Just picked up 9 bags of RO on Friday. $6.47/10lb. Hard to beat the quality at that price.

Someone on this forum said that Kroger brand charcoal is made by Royal Oak and I've used it.  But got some RO at Walmart and it was better than the Kroger brand.  However, I'll still use the Kroger brand if that's where I'm shopping at the time.  Nina in KY

Ninee, you will find a lot of variation across bags of the same brand, so you have to try several bags, probably bought from different lots to see the range.  Overall I've had very good results with Royal Oak, but I have had some bags that were less than stellar.
