My XL has some black residue on the exterior of it, not sure if its soot or what. Plus a couple months ago I used some crap lump charcoal and and that put some white stuff on it. I tried to use some all purpose kitchen cleaner, but didn't work?

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Best way to clean the inside is cook some pizzas. Not sure what you mean about the outside. The glaze should clean up pretty easy. Lump black! Stains white???

The inside is fine. What I mean by the outside, is the outside of the egg.

Big Green Eggs & Huffman - I think what your talking about are black streaks that run down the side of the egg. Mine does that as well. Not sure why but I agree with hogaholic that 409 and some elbow grease take care of that. Sometimes I even just use water and a scrub brush when my egg is warm. As for the inside, a nice hot cook will take care of that.

I usually get some of that after a long, slow cook. Cleans up with little effort.

After thinking about it. I believe the black streaks are from the exhaust that condensates then drips down the sides. This happens the most when getting the egg up to heat. Especially if your in a cooler climate.

Heavy duty oven cleaner worked perfect for the outside of my bge. For inside, just light a super hot fire- problem solved.

that stuff on the chimney is often from the daisy wheel. store the daisy wheel in the egg, and excess fat will render from it as the egg cools. haven't had a black sooty fat drip down the side of the egg in years since storing the daisy in the egg

to render fat is to extract it by melting. sure, from meat, but also from anything else. but thanks!

I get that black residue if I do a 450+ cook after a rainy period. I
believe it is the gunk weeping through the pores of the egg from the
inside. If I see it happening I try to keep it off as it surfaces with
a wet paper towel. Other then that I just mother nature take care of
it.
