Is the spider and the appropriate grate a must need accessory for certain meats? I have cooked a lot of steaks on my egg and they have all been delicious. I have just read about the Spider but didn't know if it was something I was missing out on. Thanks!!!

If I had to pick on thing and one thing only from the ceramic grill
store it would be the spider. I use it to sear my steaks and once in a
while with a wok. For steaks it can't be beat unless you do caveman
style. Buy it and the adjustable rig and don't look back. -
I would also direct you to the 2 tier rack from ceramic grillworks, the cast iron like steel will sear like a champ at hi temps plus the 2 tier makes it real simple to add more food or different types of food at the same time.

I use a spider with an old waterpan from a brinkman smoker. I put sand in he water pan to use as a heat shield/indirect cook. Works great.

Reading this and a few other threads on the spider, am I correct in unterstanding that the primary purpose is to get the steak closer to the lump for the hottest possible sear?
Do you cook your steak that close for the entire time? -
no. 2 minutes per side. then let it rest for 15 minutes. then pull the small grate out and turn the spider over. put the large grate on top of it and stabilize your egg to 400. then put the steaks back on and check internal tempurature and pull where you want it. i like mine pulled at 130. then wrap them for 15 minutes. produces a perfect medium rare/ medium steak every time.the spider is used for searing. the hotter the better. Then used for elevated cooking.greygoose

Is this what y'all recommend?Trying to let the wife know what I want/NEED!! for Christmas.

Oui Oui !
I got one, with round grille... I'd rather go for the oval grill now I used the round one for a while, as you can slide the oval to access food without removing the top grille (stock BGE grille). Sliders will help to keep the food on the grille as well.

A spider is also perfect for holding a wok.__________________________________________Dripping Springs, Texas.Just west of Austintatious
