Anybody using a single gasket?

I lost my lid gasket during a 500-550 degree steak cook-fest (yummy). The egg leaked only a little bit in back during the remainder of the cook.
I sent off for a nomex gasket, but before it arrived I had to cook out (twice actually ). Last night's cook was a low and slow 18 hr brisket. Before that cook, I loosened my lid band and pushed the lid down firmly on the bottom gasket. There was no leaking at all during the cook.
So that got me to thinking. Does anyone out there use only a single gasket on the bottom of the egg. It seems like the top one takes most of the punishment, especially in front. If I only use one, then I have an automatic back up for the next time I need it.
Thoughts or comments will be appreciated.

Yep. I use a single Rutland gasket on the base.

used to use just a rutland for years just on the base. one gasket works, i dont use any gasket anymore, still worksfukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

Rutland on the base only on my Large, Small & Mini BGE's...work great...
-
Of course, the Rutland is much thicker than the BGE gasket....The Naked Whiz

I see all the responses so far reference the Rutland gasket being used only on the bottom. This is because if you install the Rutland correctly and bunch it up, it is way thicker than a single layer of the BGE gasket, felt or nomex.
However, if you can get a single layer of gasket to work, I say go for it.The Naked Whiz -
Single Rutland on the Large, nothing on my Small or Mini.

3 all with-out....Salado TX & 30A FL: Egg Family: 3 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max when they came out (I'm good for now). Plus a couple Pit Boss Pellet Smokers.

Just a 1/4 inch thick layer of Permaflex.

I use a Rutland secured with Permatex. Works.

Oops, yes Judy. Thanks for the clarification. Was just typing away with the brain in neutral.
