Hello everyone, I recently retired and my wife bought me an extra large egg. I'm having fun trying different things but i have a problem. This egg is too big for the two of us. I'm wondering if anyone has a suggestion for cooking with less charcoal. I was thinking of maybe constructing a metal screen of smaller diameter. As you all know the charcoal is expensive and I'm forced to fill up the whole fire box to cook a couple of steaks.

2 options. They make a lump reducer for the XL.You can also fill up the XL with lump, cook what you want, close it down and use the leftover lump on the next cook.

They said what I was going to say. I have one and use it.
Enjoy your XL and your retirement. -
After your cook is over simply close the bottom damper and place the rain cap on top. Your fire will go out and next time you want to cook on your egg simply stir the used lump so the ash falls down through the lump grate into the bottom of the egg. Now relight and cook again.
Do this and never throw used lump away. If you get low on lump add more...
