i'm so proud right i'm busting at the seams!! Last night the spawn posted something about taking a road trip to jersey to go eat at a sonic.. . .
now, first you have to understand, she goes to college at Hofstra University on Long Island new york about 10 miles east of JFK airport.. . .to get to jersey, you have to drive about 30 miles, either around the belt parkway in brooklyn, then across the verazzano bridge, staten island, then another bridge, to get to jersey. .. or straight across Queens, through a tunnel into manhatten, across manhatten and then through another tunnel to get to jersey...either way, no easy trip!!!!
here is verbatim, the text exchange I just had with her:
DAD: "so, who drove to jersey?"
SPAWN "I did!!"
DAD: "So you spent 20 bucks in tolls, another 20 on gas, just to eat a 3 buck burger ...NICE!"
SPAWN "I didn't get any gas, still had plenty from christmas break! And Sarah [her roomate that was also in on this caper] helped pay for tolls! But yeah, thought you'd be proud of that! And I drove through the city!"
DAD "WHOA! And through the tunnels" [queens midtown tunnel is the one made famous in 'men in black' to get from Queens into manhatten, and then the Lincoln tunnel from manhatten into jersey]
SPAWN "yep"
DAD "Wow! What made you guys decide that you needed a sonic burger that bad?"
SPAWN "We kept seeing commercials for their red velvet cheesecake blast and we HAD to have one!!"
DAD "so, was it worth the trip?"
SPAWN "HELL YEAH!"
DAD "well, just don't do it every night"
SPAWN "Oh no way, I didn't even finish it, its still in my freezer"
DAD "It made it all the way back from Jersey?? How was the burger?"
SPAWN "We had a cooler. I had a chicken sandwich at it was awesome!"
so first my kid and her roomie decide its worth while to drive well over an hour, across the entirety of NYC (which if you've ever made this drive, is akin to some of the toughest driving on the planet), for a glorified milk shake/blizzard thing...and they are smart enough to take a cooler for leftovers!!!
is my kid awesome or what!!!...this is why she is a great egghead too!!! like father like daughter (you know, i'm not sure i've ever taken that big of a road trip just for an ice cream like that!!!
i swear, i have a tear in my eye as i type this!!

Well done sir, well done! I, unfortunately have a long way to go: with a 9 year old daughter and 6 year old son. Hoping I can instill this type of confidence in both!!
-
I've done a similar drive (jersey city to brooklyn and back in driving rain). 5 hours round trip. Painful. But everyone needs to drive in NYC to call themselves a "professional."
She's on her way to a very successful life! -
Judi, she has been doing the belt parkway to the jersey turnpike for about 2 years now to get back and forth to home here in virginia...but this was the first time she actually drove into manhatten ...i always tell her, there are grown people that won't drive the belt parkway, if you can drive that one, you can drive anywhere in the world!!
-
This is one of those things that you print off and save for that "special moment" years from now. I get the same type of text from my daughter all the time, but it usually ends with...hey can you transfer some money into my account :ermm:.
-
rut row
-
oh, i get that too!!! LOL ....
if you noticed, she wasn't worried about gas cause she still had a full tank from christmas. .. and guess who paid for that??!!! -
You got me thinking Max, I might have to drive to philly for a cheese steak and a pretzel
-
Max, I got a tear in my eyes and you better be one PROUD DAD. Thanks for sharing.

Spoken like a proud papa! I lurked on this forum for years before I finally took the plunge and began posting - followed the postings about her fabulous brownies, and of course her critical illness. Your little girl has grown up!
-
thanks!!. .. yeah, its a long way from 'dying' to driving to jersey. ...and she is managing her health much better these days too!!
-
LOL...pat, philly is only a 2 hour drive for each of us.. .i might just meet her there for cheesesteak one day too!!
one of the things i really miss about her driving up there on her own now is my forays into NYC for a "papaya king" hot dog and papaya juice!!....i usually drive almost 2 hours out of my way just for that when i would take her to school!!! -
my 17 year old son, sam has his girlfriend over for valentine's day dinner. ..now sam isn't into egging yet (he will eventually), and about the most he cooks is mac and cheese and pasta and jarred sauce. ...but tonight, he wanted to make dinner for his girlfriend. ... so he set a very romantic table....made brownies for dessert (with a little coaching from in the fine art of 'spawn's brownies').. . and (now you have to understand that jackie is a vegitarian), with a little coaching from me, he made a really nice salad and a most excellent mushroom rissotto!! ....
i think she was most impressed with his effort!!. .. funny, but its AWEFULLY quiet down in the basement right now!!! hmmm. ..i better go down there with the hose before its too late!!!
I'm proud of him too!!!!!! -
Max if you do look for Johns Roast Pork. They won the James Beard award back in 06 and is one of the favorites for the locals since 1930. My moms cousin owns it though I think she turned it over to her son. Call ahead because their hours vary and are not open on the weekends.

One of my first stops anytime I can get up there
dammit I'm hungry again -
My son went to Europe to skydive...we lived about an hour from a skydiving school...just saying, they do crazy things, but the alternatives are so much worse than these decisions...And Sonic IS worth the drive I agree!Visit my blog, dedicated to my Big Green Egg Recipies at http://www.bigtsbge.blogspot.com You can also follow my posts on FaceBook under the name Keep On Eggin' or the link http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Keep-On-Eggin/198049930216241

Good for the Spawn!!!! Maybe she's preparing for a sojourn into Formula One racing.
Max, tell the Spawn we want to see pics of her trip to Europe and a run down of the food she enjoyed. -
rebecca, she posted about 300 pics on FB.. .go "friend" her to see them. . . she had a fantastic time!!
-
well that is special, my 20 yr old daughter drove 115 mile to a sonic dinner with her cousin. It is something special
-
LOL .. .i guess we are in a special 'sonic' brotherhood!!!
-
Max,
I call that the Apple Syndrome. :P -
The apple don't fall far from the tree.....
-
LOL ... .thanks wess .. .that was a great fest when the two of us painted our hair green!! ...we were the class of the party!!
-
Very cool story Max! Nothing wrong with going where passion takes ya! Sounds like you've done well!
I've always amazed people that I always drove 1.5 hrs to Philly for just 'typical' Chinese food. Then there was the 2.5 hrs to NJ on the morning of the Soprano's finale. Needed Pizza from the Pizzaland, which is in the opening credits. -
She's acquired some critical thinking skills sometime between near death experience and nearly out of college!
GOOD JOB Dad!!
But your job as a dad will last forever
And we all know you LOVE that job -
HA HA in my day Dad we called that the "munchies" :woohoo: LOL kidding you Max
that is a drive through there. every trip down from ME to FL we go straight through NYC. If we are hauling one of the cars Neil is white knuckle till we get out of there. hairy! -
julie, trust me, i know all about the "munchies" from back in the day!! ...but in our day, we just went down to the campus book store and brought up all the pepridge farm milanos!!! or if it was late night we went to the 24 hour diner up the street. ...we didn't drive 2+hours roundtrip to satisfy the munchies!!...NO, this was truly a road trip for 'foodies'..LOL
-
Yeah thanks Julie. I just took a trip down memory lane.
-
Wow. Mushroom risotto at 17 years old? That's astounding. I had never even heard of risotto at 17. Good for him.
-
Jeez Max and I thought my daughter'3 month solo trip to New Zealand for Camping, hiking, sea kayaking and diving was a big deal.
Congrats on the milestone!
