I read an article in Mother Earth News about making your own lump. This isn't the first one I have seen but perhaps someone else would like to review it. Attached is a link:

Looks like a retort oven type contraption. I suspect the money spent making such a beast outweighs the cost of purchasing charcoal unless your doing it because you can :>).
I keep saying I'd like to make some sometime the old fashioned way in a pit covered with sod. I may..... I may just always think it would be a cool thing to do and never get done.
I've got a pile of charcoal dust I keep saying I'm gonna mix with a cornstarch slurry and press into briquettes just because I can. That is more likely to happen. -

Interesting but not for me. $6 per 8.8# at Publix is my staple.Joe - I'm a reformed gasser-holic aka 4Runner Columbia, SC Wonderful BGE Resource Site: http://www.nakedwhiz.com/ceramicfaq.htm and http://www.nibblemethis.com/ and http://playingwithfireandsmoke.blogspot.com/2006/02/recipes.html
What am I drinking now? Woodford....neat -
Well you can count me in....
I've got about 2 cords of maple and oak logs that I'm saving up to make lump with. I know I have the large 55 gallon barrel but can't remember if I ever got the smaller one....I guess the project has been on the back burner for a little bit!
Still, one of these day's I am going to do it!
I buy my mesquite lump for $12 for 40lbs at Cash and Carry which is cheeeeap, but I don't care, I still want to make it!
