    Bill:

I've got patches on stand by just in case. I remember the 1st couple of days being the worst with things getting easier each day after that.

The last time I got caught in a moment of weakness - having a beer on the deck - I remember thinking "what the heck" , one smoke I will be fine. One smoke and I was right back where I had started.

    Happy New Year Michael,

My fiance stopped on his birthday in Aug of 09. Though it was difficult for him, he has not picked one up since. Best of luck to you!

    Good Man Leroy,

I stopped smoking in 1996 after my mother was diagnosed with emphysema. Wife quit with me. We had a reason to quit, and it was no trouble. She had smoked since high school, and I smoked since just after school. I don't miss it a bit... but beware of the classic exchange of habits. I went to eating after stopping smoking and gained 70 pounds quickly! Next thing you know I had diabetes so beware. When you get the urge to smoke chew a piece of gum and take a 30 minute walk. You'll be around a few years extra for your effort!

Good Luck and Happy New Year! Tell the Spring Hen the same!

    Thanks Dave:

Sometimes we trade in one bad habit for another. I'll try not falling into that trap.

I was going to LSU on the GI Bill at the time, smoking 3 packs of short Camels a day, working for Pinkerton at minimum wage and was just really - issed off that they raised the price to $2.90 a carton from $2.80. I stuck an unopened pack in my pocket and never opened them. Tossed them about a week later knowing I had just saved my life. Still have my old Zippo lighter.

Even today, forty-one years later, I could enjoy a Camel after a good meal or with an ice cold beer. But I know better.

Good for you - you will be glad you did this. Old habits die hard - and quitting smoking is just as hard for a smoker and losing weight is for someone who is overweight, or whatever anyone's particular vice may be. Hang in there, and take it one day at a time. I noticed a comment in an earlier thread about COPD - if that is an issue for you, find a good Pulmonary specialist NOW. Stopping smoking will make a difference! Happy "Smoke-free" New Year!

    Michael,

That is the best news I've heard all day!

I see too many patients every day scheduled for surgery who have diseases either directly or indirectly related to their smoking habit!

It will probably be the hardest thing you do this year (if not ever)! When it gets tough, come here and you will find great support!

You will make your body 7 years younger (physiologically) compared to your calendar age - younger ain't so bad.

I've never been diagnosed with COPD and I hope I never will.

    Thanks Clark!

Most smokers I know would be happy to quit - it's a shame that it just so difficult to do.

    I hear you!

In my opinion (and it would seem that other forum members share that opinion), you can only quit smoking when the time is right for you. It took me ages to prepare myself.

    Good luck making your decision.
