Any reason not to use a metal firebox?

The firebox in my Egg now has multiple cracks in it and is not long for this world. (Yes, it will get me through Thanksgiving. Whew!) Because of my work, I know some people who run a machine shop that makes custom pieces for oilfield service companies. They will make me a firebox out of stainless steel if I want one but I don't know if there is any reason NOT to do this instead of buying a replacement from my local Egg store.

You'll get a free replacement for your old cracked one. Stainless will hold the fire, but won't hold the heat like your stone/ceramic one.

I would guess that the heat generated by the metal would be far hotter than the ceramic which holds heat and burn the coals very fast and mess up the proven methods.

Your fire box is covered under warranty and is replaceable free if you're the original owner. Don't know about the SS fire box, but, I'd be a little concerned about the expansion and contraction characteristics as opposed to ceramic.

My original firebox has been in four pieces for about 8 years now and it still works fine. As long as the pieces will sit in place, there's no reason to replace the firebox. You might want to get a replacement and keep it at the ready should the original be unusable, but my replacement has been sitting in the garage, also for 8 years.The Naked Whiz

Unfortunately, I am not the original owner, I am owner #3. My Egg is actually over 30 years old and is clay, not ceramic. I don't know if it is even the same size as any of the current Eggs.

IMHO the age is a definite reason not to use metal as the older kilns would not go to the higher temperatures. I have a 30 year old Imperial Kamado that I restored and I dare not go over 375F.

Mine is in 13 pieces. It stays mostly together but sometimes on piece will fall out and then I get coals outside the firebox between it and the walls of the Egg. I JB Welded some of it back together about 5 years ago but this one joint doesn't hold for some reason.

I talk very nice to it. I have patched the fire box with JB Weld twice, hence the question.

Even though you are not the original owner, if you buy a new firebox the new one is now covered under the BGE lifetime warranty. Just keep the receipt.

Doesn't the Komodo Kamado use a metal basket for the lump?
