Erratic ThermaPen Readings

Just recently my ThermaPen has been acting wonky. Readings are erratic and inconsistent. Anyone else experienced this? Is there a low battery indicator? How long do the batteries normally last? Mine's a couple years old.

bet it is the batteries :) mine are a couple of years old and no problem. my dads is newer and he just had to change his. it was doing the same thing.

That's what mine did too. Crazy readings all over the place. New battery and whala!
  • Put in boiling water, check if it is off, should red 212.

Thanks. I'll replace them/it and cross my fingers.

Great to hear. Thanks. New battery today.

That's actually what I was doing when I decided to label its performance "erratic". It bounced from 180 to 240 in a perfectly stable pot of boiling water.
  • Battery does sound like the issue. But why not contact them anyway?

    Good luck!!

Mine has been doing the same thing but with a wider variance in temp. fluctuation. Works sometimes sometimes not. I changed the battery and no change.
If the battery does not solve the problem contact Amber at the Thermoworks. I believe BigBadger put the link in his post.

The Thermoworks folks are great and stand behind the products. Amber is great to work with and I am sure will be happy to help you out.

  • Sounds pretty "screwy" Do you have the splash proof pen? How old is it?
  • If there is something wrong with it that a battery can't fix be assured they have a great warranty. Tim B)
