making due: using bricks to elevate

I do not have an adjustable rig right and want to get some food higher up in the dome and/or have 2 levels. I have some nice clean bricks leftover from when the house was built. I was thinking of making 4 stacks of 2 which sit on my standard grate and then putting my CI grate on top of the bricks.

Excuse my ignorance on this, but do you think this is safe (food-wise)? Are bricks treated chemically or anything?

As long as they aren't galvanized you'll be OK.


OK, now that I got that out of the way, you'll be fine using bricks to raise the grid.

i used pavers for a while on the large, still use them in the small.

Because they will crack? Unless they crumbled, I'd be okay. Also, I forgot to mention this is not a hot cook (chicken wings) so I'm thinking 300-350 tops.

your resourcefulness is good and yes they will work - except 4 stacks of 2 bricks each is going to take up some real estate inside your egg. You might want to consider buying a box of these face bricks which can be stood on their side. Size-wise they are 9 X 4.5 x 1.75.

someone always warns about the mythical exploding "regular" brick.

you don't need firebrick, but they are just made to handle extreme high extended heat. and they can be had in splits, thinner dimensions which might be more versatile.

but for the vast majority of cooks you won't have an issue with regular brick.
