Cypress table top repair

Here is a pic of my 2.5 yr old table after the first run of sanding before applying spar eurethane tomorrow. My question for those who have experienced the table top boards coming loose and popping up is how you fasten them back down; I looked under a loose one to figure out it was only on there with a couple of big staples and glue :pinch: I am considering using regular wood screws to attach them back to the base which you seem to be a good solution except one of the smaller boards is split right in the middle so I may put some guerilla glue in the split and then screw it down. Anyone else experienced this?

I would use exterior wood glue for the split and wood screws if you dont have a finish nailer.

what ever it takes keep that egg on that table.if not will cost in the end!

The wood screws should work fine. I like to predrill to avoid additional splitting

Another reason not to use screws is I am considering trying to find a piece of granite for it since there are a couple of industrial granite businesses near my work. It would be allot easier to pull the boards up instead of having to unscrew everything. Maybe I can rent a finish nailer at Lowes?

Thanks Pat, I was thinking the same thing about the predrilling.

You may want to use some screws and come up from the bottom with them. Pre-drill first and you should be good as new, without any new holes or cracks.

On the spar urethane, I tried the Varathane brand on my table, and it took a long smelly time to dry. I switched to the Minwax Helmsman brand, which dried quickly with minimal smell. I like it.

Should have gone with the Minwax first; I've used some of their other products and liked them. (No connection to them except as a satisfied customer.)

The Minwax Helmsman is what I have I bought it after doing a search here and I think Fla Poolman had EXCELLENT results with it-beautiful pics.

You may have seen my earlier post.
I had a sheet metal shop fab me a SS top for mine. So far so great!
I also placed another support under where the Egg sits,,, as insurance.
