Did a test fire to 650 degrees. Checked the gasket, we are good. Double check the alignment of the dome and base, perfect. Dollar bill test before first firing, perfect. closed it up for a slow shut down, waiting. I did notice the gasket overhang is now burn off. Good, now I do not have to trim it. It does smell a bit. I will put some mequeite on the coals, that should cure it. Some post had said 10 firings others have said go for it. Since I have spare gasket material on hand, I just went for it. I think if you have the dome and base aligned, you should be fine.

glad to hear this and anxious to see pics of your mini cooks...

Thinking of doing somthing basic like a T-Rex steak. Right now just trying to get it seasoned with a little smoke. BTW put a terra cota plate on to see if it would break, 350 no problems. It might make a good plate setter.SEE YOU IN FLORIDA, March 14th and 15th 2014 http://www.sunshinestateeggfest.com You must master temp, smoke, and time to achive moisture, taste, and texture! i thought of that but was afraid that there might be laed in it... do you think one of those crayons you rub on paint to see if it has lead in it would work on terra cotta? terra cotta is cheap, easily available in many sizes, easy to cut and and the saucer shape lined with foil would make a great plate setter.. seems like we have a project. thanks

I think we do have a project, but it will be hard to beat your soap stone. Cooking on Aluminum is a good way to die very slow, not for me. For that matter niether is lead.SEE YOU IN FLORIDA, March 14th and 15th 2014 http://www.sunshinestateeggfest.com You must master temp, smoke, and time to achive moisture, taste, and texture!
