Sand in Drip Pan on Raised Half Moon Grid

So I thought that if I added clean sand to the drip pan on my raised 1/2 moon grid extender for my XL that it would provide a really good indirect heat barrier. Anybody else try this? Take a look and tell me what you think. I haven't tried it out yet, but it seems it would work.
I filled the pan with sand and evened it out:
I then wrapped it in heavy duty foil:
Here it is on the half moon grid on my XL:

looks like a great idea. Is there a slot for it? Saw someone post about using sand maybe TNW or Thirdeye. Should work great. Good Luck

That should work...some of the WSM guys use sand in the water pan. Might want to poke some holes in the foil so the fats don't roll off. it's hard to tell but how much clearance is there from the top of the foil to the grate?Happy Trails~thirdeye~Barbecue is not rocket surgery

There isn't really much room between the foil and the grid on the half moon, but I don't think it's a problem. I don't plan on using it for things like pork butt that have tons of grease. I more wanted to use it to have another heat zone on the grill so that things won't burn after they sear. I love to cook entire meals on the XL and this increases my heat zone capability without taking away my lower grid space. I'll let you know how it works out.

Your subject sounds like the title of a Tom Waits song!

No reason why it shouldn't work - nice idea. Thanks for sharing. I think you just sold a few half moon grids. I'm getting one - maybe you should ask for a commission   .

Someone mentioned using sand the other day. They recommended using it as a barrier when making pizza to eliminate burning the bottom

Thanks for idea, I picked up my Half Moon yesterday and will definitely try.

trying to post a pic of the results...here goes.
Seared chicken on hot grate then finished indirect on the grid. Worked like a charm. Very juicy.
