Wooden table

I just built a wooden table and want to put my egg on it with only the supplied feet under it. I’m reading that the wood underneath it might catch fire but I’m not sure? Anybody have anything to say about this? Even the egg table has pics of just the egg on the feet.

If you have an air gap you should be ok, although you can still get some heat damage to the shelf it's on.   I highly recommend putting a double walled pizza pan in the air gap, or some radiant barrier that is metal.  It's not a safety issue as long as you have an air gap, it's more of an aesthetic issue in keeping the wood from browning and discoloring from the heat (can also damage any finish on the wood).

The feet don't help support the bottom of the egg.  The table nest does.  In the unlikely event the bottom cracks, not having bottom support can result in a chunk falling on to the table and possibly fire.

Thank you for your reply, I’ll look into that table nest and might buy it soon. I usually do low and slow so I’ll try just the feet right now and see how it goes. It’s in a high wind area also.

If you only run low and slow, the setup with the feet will be fine.

  • Not familiar with the feet, but I only have a table nest on a wood table and have not had any discoloring. Having said that, I hardly ever do high-heat cooks on the BGE anymore.

Just waiting for the primo legs to come in and I’m finished.
  • Looks good! I use the table nest with my wood table. Unsure if the green feet would create enough of an air gap for my liking. I would monitor it very closely the first few cooks. Table nests run around $30 for the LBGE - worth the peace & mind IMO.
