XL kick ash basket question

I’ve only found one video of a person using it in the XL. He had the basket setting on top of the cast iron grate. My understanding is it was supposed to replace the cast iron part. Am I correct? Seems kinda pointless to just set it on top.

It’s to keep it from sagging. Why do you need a basket for an XL? Airflow is never a problem with the XL given the large grate size and it’ll hold the ash from 40lbs of lump.  XL is a stir and go egg.

Either way is fine.  I run mine without.

I keep the grate under the basket in my eggs, including the bigger XLs.

I think the newer XL basket is made from thicker material than the original that would sag.

I also thought the early models were a thinner gauge steel?

Yes, they were also a different design.  Any of the ones you see all jacked up were from the first run.  I have all of the 2nd gens ones in my Eggs......still going strong.  And then the 3rd gen is stainless.

All of mine are still perfect as well. Excellent product IMO

I agree with you.  I recently bought one that does not sit flat in my XL.  So I tried it and the basket slips to one side.  I wound up having to use the grate.  So I will be returning the one that I ordered.

More than likely it's your fire box that is slightly off. Ceramic Molding in the Egg parts is never perfect. Just like the base and dome.

I use this below my KAB IN THE XL. The only reason I have the KAB is not air flow, but ease of cleaning the ash out of the bottom.

This set up works for me, assures airflow, never have to worry about the grate getting clogged up with lump, easier and lighter than having to deal with essentially a cast iron charcoal holder.
