Smokeware problem

Hey Guys,
have a small problem with my smokeware temp  gauge its reading off by 100 or 125° Is the newest version and should not need to be  calibrated. I checked it against my other smokeware temp gauge.

Thoughts? What should I do?

pic is BBQ guru is reading 266•

Email Smokeware. I'm sure Matt and the gang will take care of you.

I'll assume you're smart enough to be taking temps from the same spot. Meaning Smokeware is reading dome temp and if you're comparing the two the DigiQ should be reading at the same spot...not the grid.
Also I would check on boiling water as it is a much better test sample...212°F or 100°C

Are you sure you're not just seeing a normal difference between grate and dome temp? Have you tried testing the smokeware thermometer in boiling water?

You might want to check your guru probe in boiling water while you're at it.

  • As always thanks for the quick response!

BBQ GURU is set to  Fahrenheit

guru is clipped to the temp  gauge so taking the temp is the same location.

I find this strange as this is less the. 6 months old.

It happens. I'd still check against boiling water as it is just a more exact gauge. Then email Smokeware.

  • So. I just spoke with the shop I purchased it from and they told me it just needs to be calibrated? I thought these didn't need to be calibrated can anybody confirm?

    Thanks!

  • There are 2 different models. Depends which one you have.
  • Numbers on the outside so I think that means you can't calibrate

As mentioned about, check both probes in boiling water. If the SW thermo is still off, email SmokeWare. I am almost certain they will resolve your issue promptly. Matt is good about taking care of his customers.

I ordered one of their calibrate capable models.  When it arrived, it could not be calibrated and was not reading 212 at boiling.  They sent a replacement, which the temp would not move in boiling from 100 unless i tapped it on the counter.  They sent another one, which i requested they test first, and it works perfectly.  They made it right.

I have the same gauge...picked it up form CGS last month.  Had a feeling it was off so confirmed with the Boiling Water test...off by 25 degrees.  Sent a message to CGS so in the meantime I will put my original gauge back on the egg.

  •  Sounds like Smokeware gauges are suspect with all these issues.

Also on an analog temperature gauge calibrating at 212 only ensures 212 is correct.  Having worked in calibration labs for the Navy, at a nuke power plant, and a major manufacturer I have calibrated many temperature gauges. The only way to know for sure is to check at the 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% points against a known good gauge that is 3 to 10 times more accurate. Of course we eggers don't have the equipment to do a true calibration check.

If my gauge becomes suspect I will just replace it. If I were inclined to check it I would use a good digital thermometer placing the digital probe tip right beside the dome thermometer tip. Then I would take the Egg to the 25, 50, 75, and 100 % points of the gauge and compare. If I were only concerned about the low end then the boiling water and 212 check is fine. The dome gauge is likely only accurate to +/- 3 %  if that.
     My 2 cents.
