Sugar free rub suggestions

So I have some family coming to visit for the holidays with quite a few dietary restrictions to include no sugar (white, brown, turbinado, nothing.) But they can do honey or agave. The rubs that I use for pork ribs and butts I make from scratch and they all have some time of sugar in them. Any recommendations on a rub recipe (non-texas style) that wouldn't include sugar? Or could I just make my regular rubs and leave out sugar but put honey/agave on the meat to adhere the rub?
Thoughts?
Thanks!

What if you threw in some granulated honey or maple sugar in place of the sugar.
