one last call - baking steel order in central Illinois
RRP
Posts: 26,479
Recently I started a thread about ordering 14" round baking steels cut from A36 steel 3/8" thick with a smooth edge. I am NOT selling these - just facilitating a possible group buy for sake of a quantity discount. Right now there are only 2 of us and our cost will be $27.66 Plus Tax which is down from $37.30 PT for merely 1. If I was able to order 5 then it goes down to $21.87 PT. Still on the fence? Compare this price to $80 ordering one on the internet. I will place the order at 1:30 CST tomorrow and the train WILL leave on time.

Do people only bake on these, or do you cook other stuff like a griddle?

Based on another person's research it appears FedX Ground might be the cheapest, but if you want to give me your zip code I might be able to estimate it for you. My guess is it will be around $20 though.LincolnPark_Egghead said:How much is shipping to Chicago?Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time -
Thanks. If you could estimate it to 60614 that would be great.Large BGE, Chicago, IL

In for 1 - shipping to 44140

To Windy City it looks like about $19 - BTW there might be a savings on the steel itself if I can order 5 of them for a discount in cost.LincolnPark_Egghead said:Thanks. If you could estimate it to 60614 that would be great.Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time -

Am I too late? What would shipping to 71405 be?
-
@RRP How far are you willing to ship? I'm interested, but this could be a serious inconvenience to you if those of us across the country jump on board. You already do enough with the Rutland gaskets.Large BGE & mini stepchild & a KJ Jr.The damp PNW

Another article folks might want to read if they are interested in a "baking steel" is J. Kenji's piece from 2012:
http://slice.seriouseats.com/archives/2012/09/the-pizza-lab-the-baking-steel-delivers.html
Baking steels are nice in a home oven but you don't really want to use one if you are cooking your pizzas with an egg cranked up to 800+ degrees.“Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.” ― Philip K. Diçk -
No particular inconvenience to me - FedX is doing the shipping and you will be footing the shipping cost. I will need to figure some packaging cut from cardboard, but I like that type of challenge.BizGreenEgg said:@RRP How far are you willing to ship? Does this have mill scale on it or has it been polished?

The final order went in today for 8 of them and at $20.42PT they are merely laser cut so yes they will have mill scale on them at that price. I am told that a bath for 48 hours in vinegar will remove the scale.Tspud1 said:RRP said:Recently I started a thread about ordering 14" round baking steels cut from A36 steel 3/8" thick with a smooth edge. Awesome price!

I've been thinking about and researching a baking steel for my Large BGE and came across this thread.
I realize this is over a year old but trying to see if any reasonable similar deals are available today?
I think I'd love the versatility of a baking steel for smash burgers, searing steaks and oh yeah, trying some baking.
Wondering for a large Egg is 14" largest you can use or is 16" possible.
Does it have to be 3/8" thick or can 1/4" thick work?
Lastly what is A36 steel?
Thanks for any advice on this,
Joey
