Cantenna booster for ET732/733

I have an ET732 and a house that seems to absorb radio waves very well.  I know it has vinyl coated metal window frames and low e glass.  I also suspect it may have an aluminized tyvek wrap or metal studs.  We didn't build the house but the original owner said they did a lot of extra things to make it heat efficient.  I am thinking of building a cantenna to direct the signal as the receiver will not work in my bedroom on the far end of the house from the deck.  Do I need to just drill a small hole in the rear of the can to insert the antenna through or would it be better to place the whole transmitter inside the can?  I would like to have this work for the "just in case" scenarios.

I never had good cell signal with AT&T and they always blamed it on the radiant barrier and Windows too. I modded my et73 to add an external antenna and the range problems were solved. The et732 had an external antenna and was supposed to work better. Does it work with the advertised range if you're outside with a clear line of sight?

I have checked it outside and it appears to be working properly.  We also have issues with cell phone reception which is why I suspect the house construction.  I guess I will construct a device and see if it will increase the signal strength to the receiver.  I will try to just put the antenna stub through a hole in the end first and see if that works otherwise I will place the entire unit inside the tube and try that.  No particular rush right now as it will be dropping into negative degrees this evening.  Gives me plenty of fabrication time.  I will report back if any improvement after finished.
