So I cooked a butt last night, and my temp stayed rather hot, and I assume its from my grate. I assume there's a learning curve? This was my first long cook with it.

The grate will not affect the temp, it will affect your ability to hold a specific temp. If previous butts used the BGE OME grate, the same vent settings will provide a slightly higher temp using the HQ, IMHO.The beauty of the HQ is it will hold lows without having to clear the holes for air flow. Try dialling your vents back and all should be good.Delta B.C. - Whiskey and steak, because no good story ever started with someone having a salad!
