Lava or flames?

Trying to get the grill lava hot for steaks--basically wide open or nearly so. My issue is always that at those temps I don't have lava, I have a real fire (ie, flames). This tends to get more burn than sear, even with a pretty brief (90 second) exposure.

Anyway to get less flame and more red hot coals? Am I just not waiting long enough?

Thanks

Dome open will give you flames from the extra oxygen. Shut the dome and flames should go out

What stike said.  Just get the dome temp up and don't worry about flames when open.  It's the hot steel that gives those great marks.  Short exposure keeps the inside rare.  For all the "low and slow" threads perhaps we need a "hot and fast" thread.
