What ever you decide to put on it make sure the wood is dry. Treated wood is wet treated and if you put any sort of finish on it before it drys it will pop off as the moisture is drawn out of the wood.

Looking at the last pic, it looks like your top and bottom bands are not evenly spaced all the way around the egg. Check the distance between the bands where the hinge is and then make sure the measurement where the handle is located is the same.
