What also works for me is to leave the lid open until you get a good set of coals, then close the lid and let the fire build to the appropriate temp.
Tips for starting the Egg - Bringing to temp.
I had the same issue and found that I had to take out the inner clay shell (2 halves) and clean out the ash. After replacing the shell the problem was resolved - David
