If I add a paver I believe it will be fine. I also may cover the wood with the cement grill pad to add a level of protection since I have a couple laying around here.

Seems that 2 pavers is the way to go, surely with two of them your safe and they are cheap. The above idea would be great if you had not yet built your table. If I build a new table, may plan it for bricks.

Thanks guys, I was just adding and adding to keep it full, even used up a partial bag of kingsford briquets in the chimney once to start. I only recently let it burn down and sure enough most of the holes were plugged.
