I'm sure lots will comment on this, but you need some air space below your egg, or fire brick is best otherwise the heat transfer to the wood might cause a hazard.

Good friend of mine had the same thing. He did a good hot burn and it took care of that. Almost wondering if a big bag of dessicant is warranted when leaving the egg for a long time.
