    according to BGE brochure it can be done vertically.  we did 6 shoulders- I just threw them all on in more or less of a pile and let them cook at 210 degrees for about 18-19 hours   we DID take picts but they didn't turn out.  smoke and mist in the air clogged camera phone lens!
