Anyone in and around Alpharetta know where I can get wood for adding to a cook for smoke flavor? I've been to American Backyard off Northpoint Drive, but wondered if there was anywhere else.
I keep seeing in recipes where it will suggest putting a "fist size" piece of wood on the fire, but all I can find are small chips. Is there a benefit to one versus the other?

Big Orange and Big Blue Box stores carry chunk wood for smoking, as does Ace Hardware.
-
Yup, I second the Ace Hardware. Bass Pro Shops also. It may be seasonal up there but down here Wally World has Hickory and Mesquite.
-
not sure but i think the only difference/advantage between chips and chunk is that the chunk will last longer

I'm in Woodstock, and my local Kroger has (or had) Hickory chunks. They come in a bag and are with the chips/charcoal.
I'm not sure if they carry them all year long. They reduce their inventory of bbq items at summers end.Which came first the chicken or the egg? I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg. -
If you head north on hwy 9,The Mad Hatter has a great selection of wood chunks and chips. They are in the Midway area, just south of Post Rd.

Mad Hatter folks are great and I also like giving my business to a BGE retailer!
They also have a good selection of rubs, marinades and sauces -
Amazon.com has the Weber 5 pound bags for under $7.
Free shipping. Nice clean wood. Hard for me to find apple and cherry local so I normally order. The free shipping is the plus. The Eggs don't need much smoking wood so they last a long time. They are not fist size but work better than chips.

If you want to try online or mail-order, there is "Baxter's Original" in south Georgia. It does not make sense to buy small quantities of hickory or other real common woods from them, but if you want larger quantities or something like peach or apricot, it can make sense. I bought a 50 lb box of peach from them a while ago.

Same here in south Texas.
Hickory and Mesquite and Pecan are easy to find.
The fruit wood is the trick.Thank you,DarianGalveston Texas -
I live in Alpharetta and recently pickup up some mesquite chunks at our local Publix. I made a coffee encrusted pork tenderlion this week-end using the wood chunks and it was the best ever. Publix also carries the hickory chunks.

I'm in Marietta and I have FREE Cherry wood, cut, split and stacked. Let me know.

If you head down to Jackson, Ga., I'll load you up on hickory for free!
