Hut almost ready!
Nature Boy

I envisioned this outdoor Egging area a few years back. I was sitting in the driveway after our house burned down. Nothing was going on...builders and insurance were fighting....and a blue tarp covering a dark shell of a house flapped in the wind. I had a sketch pad, and started playing with ideas for an area where I could hang outside, throw parties, and even teach bbq classes.
Well, I am two boards short on the roof decking, but it's almost ready for roofing, and it IS ready for a party this weekend. My hands are sore, and my feet are killing me, but that's part of doing projects like this once you turn 50 ;-) Anyways, thought I'd share my excitement! The Nature Hut is open.
On another note, been a frustrating path to build out the new dizzy headquarters, but the second floor concrete is now poured. Walls go in up top, then wires start getting pulled. Yeeha!!

Supposed to be fine weather this weekend. We'll be peppering the air here in Northern Virginny! Happy egging to yall this weekend.

That electrical cord is against code!!! Better not have a second fire, the insurance people would be upset !! :woohoo:
-
That thing looks awesome!!
-
A second fire would bite. But at least the house would be okay!
I believe the insurance company is already upset anyways, but they didn't kick us out. ;-)
Cheers!
Chris -
Thanks mang. I'm pumped. Where in suburban DC are you?
Cheers

Mightyfine Chris - really like some of the architectural touches
Lot of great memories to come in the hut -
thats really nice, hope stike doesnt jinx you with talk about the wind blowing it over  he did that to my deck......... and then a post that stood there holding it up for twenty years fell out   really nice job, start enjoying it, wheres the kegeratorfukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it
-
Looks like some great progress. Nicely done with the rafter framing. Are you going with a standing seam roof with a huge ridge vent?
-
What a 'hut'! It's beautiful, especially with the curved wood detail and stone floor (sorry, I don't know the architectural nomenclature).

I live in Sterling around Potomac Falls High School. Love it out here. -
I don't care what stikeboy says. That thing ain't budging! Kegerator....hmmmmm!
Chris -
I am thinking about metal if I can find some money. Doubt we'll need a ridge vent, it has plenty of ventilation! Cheers mang.

the kegerator would have been my downfall, i would have gotten that first and never got to the hut  :laugh:fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

Hey Chris, Glad things are getting better for you. Your hut looks great I like the way you made all the cuts in the beams and rafters and the tongue and groove decking will look great from the underside. Great job Chris.
-
Not anything powered. Ridge vent meaning it will keep the rain/snow out but still let the smoke out. You'll see them on homes with asphalt shingles and at the ridge you'll see a thicker looking black cap that is shingled. In your case you have such a large distance between the decking (up and over the beam) you'll need something big. The metal roofing company is sure to have what you'll need.
I'm doing all I can for the project from here. Spinnin folks -
That's pretty sweet.
-
Only one kegerator? You have to have one for each of your favorite beers!!
-
i just need one tap, and a cold box big enough for three kegs of guinness or i could just keep the basement at 42 degrees

very nice,Chris

Looks a lot better now than when I was there 16 months ago Chris. Glad to see it is getting done. Wish I could be there to help you christen it.
-
Beautiful job, Chris. I love the curved roof supports, how'd you do that? Are those laminated beams supporting the structure?
I agree with the comments on the roof vent, btw. It'll help with the smoke and will slow down the ceiling from getting stained with grease smoke. Speaking from some experience here as I didn't use one in an earlier "hut".
Great job, have a ton of fun in it. Love the rubs, btw. -
very nice - you have a great skill!!
-
now THAT...(pause for dramatic effect) is how you do it up!context is important
-
SWEET! Congradulations on the build. Both of em.Ya'll stay safe!

Shoot me an email if you're free anytime saturday afternoon eve. I'm in Fairfax. We'll be eating and drinking well and you're free to swing by.
Cheers

Thanks Scott. I drew the curved roof braces on my mac in adobe illustrator. Printed it out on 3 sheets, taped them together and made a template. Cut the braces from 2x12s on the band saw, then sanded.
All the "beams" are sanwiched 2-bys. The main beam is three 2x12a, the ceiling ties are 2x8's with a 2x6 between, and the rafters are 2x6's with a 2x4 between.
First time I've built anything like this, and it was actually pretty simple. A few thousand screws and nails, but it went together nicely by measuring three times, cutting once ;-) Think I have 5 weekends into it.
We'll break it in good this weekend!

When we had our home re-roofed several years ago the roofer cut through the peaks and installed that ridging material. I swear it made a world of difference in cooling costs - especially since we opted for a black roof! Money well spent IMO.Re-gasketing America one yard at a time.

Much appreciate the kind words. I'm really happy with the way it came out, and kinda surprised myself actually. Mostly looking forward to seein some smoke this afternoon. Will be starting a 26 pound beef shoulder clod early this evening.
Cheers yall!
Chris -
Looking good my friend.
