I usually light my large with a cube.

I use Wicked Good, put the cube in the center and face the Egg to the North.

I've been Egging for almost a year now.

I notice the fire spreads towards the hinge and then to the sides.

I'm wondering, is the vent opening in the bottom causing a draft to fan the fire and direct it to the rear of the fire box?

Does anyone have a similar experience?

I'm wondering if I may want to place the cube in the front of the firebox.

Dave - For starters, always light in at least three locations: 12, 4 and 8 o'clock, about 2" in from the edge.
Most Eggs have a tendency to burn hotter toward the hinge.
A remedy to this problem is a 7" piece of 2" x 3" steel angle placed close to the vent opening:

    Hope this helps.

Thanks, I'll give it a shot.

I made a small "tent" of expanded steel which helps lighting. It is small enough for a cube to fit in it. It allows me to dump the lump on a burning cube without putting it out. It works great, but is about to burn up after about 10 uses. Once I have it perfected, I'll post with pictures.

"Facing north" a bit of sarcasm on my part. I find if you don't put lots and lots of details in a post, some wise guy will reply "what kind of matches did you use", or "how can we help you if you don't give us any information?".

It is the same on most forums.

    Thanks again.
