I cook alot of pizzas on my egg so I decided to cook some calzones. Well, technically they aren't calzones since I put some homemade pizza sauce my fiance makes. The filling is mozzarella, parmegiano reggiano, pepperoni, and sauteed onions, green bellpeppers, and jalapenos! Turned out great!
crust turned out perfect on the bottom
Cooked alot faster than I thought, about 12 minutes, platesetter legs down, 425* on pizza stone

looks good..
what is it about the sauce that technically doesn't make it a calzone?context is important -
Looks great!
We've been doing a lot of pizzas lately and my wife and daughter love calzones. Thanks for sharing. -
I guess a calzone is called something else if it has sauce in it. But to me it is still a calzone!
-
According to our local Italian Chef, you are right in calling it a Calzone. Calzones have the sauce inside while a Stromboli has the sauce on the outside. By any name, yours looks delicious.
-
And I thought stromboli had tomato sauce on the inside, while calzones had no sauce, just ricotta cheese (and other stuff).
-
Ricotta is one of the standard ingredients. The Chef I referred to explained the difference this way; a Calzone is like a pizza folded in half and a Stromboli is like an Italian Sub with the dipping sauce on the side.

Hmm, I read read on this forum somewhere that a stromboli had sauce inside and a calzone, maybe that person had it mixed up! Every single calzone I have had had sauce in it!
-
looks good, what is the dough recipe that you used??
-
Ironically, I was just wondering about this very same thing..
I just looked it up on Wikipedia and found:
(notice the "citation needed" note.)
Calzones are similar to stromboli, but traditionally the two are distinct dishes. A common misconception is that the ingredients are the primary difference between the two.[citation needed] The ingredients are actually at the discretion of the chef. Although most strombolis are rolled, strombolis have also been known to be prepared like a calzone, where the only difference is that a calzone has the sauce on the side, where the stromboli is served with sauce on the inside of the folded crust.[citation needed][/b] -
I cheated on this cook and used premade Fresh & Easy dough. Actually not bad stuff if you want to do something quick!
