Hi,
While researching for a smoker I came across the Green Egg and have some questions. I have never used a smoker but love eating smoked foods and I think it's time to learn to make my own.
I am eyeing the Medium sized egg. I mainly want to do chicken wings for now. Is it possible to setup multiple tiers of racks as wings are pretty small. How many tiers do you think I would be able to do per batch?
thnx

The medium's cross section at lid level is 15", and above that it is a hemisphere.
I haven't used racks for wings, but have a set of homemade grills that I can stack three high. Kind of clumsy, but works.
If you get an Egg, you will move onto many more things very rapidly. The question will be what is there not to smoke? -
You may want to think about the large Egg if you're looking to do a lot of wings. There are a lot more accessories for it than the medium. You can fit two racks like the one pictured, side by side in the large for a total of 30 wings. -RP

I concur, I have a medium and an XL. The Medium is quite versatile but you may find that you will want to take advantage of the Large with the greatest amount of optional setups for things such as wings. The XL is huge but actually has less eggsecories than the Large. That said, I love both of mine and would add a large but not give up either of the other two.

Our egg, which art in sizes, hallowed be thy smoke, thy will be grilled, at home as it is at eggfest. For thine is the grill, the smoke, the egg. Let's eat!

oooooooooooooooo. im drooooooooling
So you dont lay them flat on the grill?
I might have to move up to a large. -
Welcome to the forum.
gdenby has covered what he has done. Extended racks can be made with bolts/nuts/washers. The number of racks will depend on how far apart you space the racks.
You didn't mention how many people are in your family and how many people would be the largest crowd you would be cooking for.
The medium is a good egg, but if you have the money look at the large. There are more ready made accessories available for the large than the other size eggs.
The egg is so much more than a smoker. There are months when we don't use the oven or stove top every thing is cooked on the egg.
Here are some pictures (a bunch of them)...
Slow smoked Brisket
Pot Roast
Chicken Salad
Chili Verde
Pastrami Burger
Potato Rolls (With some butter and jam)
Summer Sausage
Car Sui (Pork)
Ham
Thanksgiving Turkey (23# done on the large)
Whole ham (deli cut)
Pork Ribs
Tuna Melt
Brats
Chicken with white sauce
Whole chicken
Steaks
Barbacoa salad
Barbacoa burrito
Pulled Pork (Boston Butt) ready for serving
Pulled Pork (Boston Butt) with BBQ sauce for BBQ sandwiches
Buckboard Bacon
Beef Ribs
Friendship Bread
Stuffed Peppers
Chicken & Spuds in one cook (chicken over tray of veggies
Pizza
Breakfast
Dutch Oven Roast
Chili
Blackened Trout & Catfish
Chioppino
And of course Double Chocolate Cake
All these dishes and many more can be done on any of the eggs. The 23# turkey won't fit on the medium or smaller but of course a smaller bird will.

Sure you can, there are several multi tier grids available for the large but I'm not aware of any for the medium. Of course you could always make your own. -RP

I agree completely. I got the medium and truly wished I had gotten a large. If I cooked more often, I would add a large for the versatility and a small for the basic burgers, bangers, etc.

I have a medium and I think it is an excellant choice. I usually do 1 layer and I get the package at Sam's. Not sure how many but it must be at least 15 whole wings.

Thanks KJ. :pinch: I REALLY needed to see that spread of chow 3 hours after lunch and 4 hours before dinner. From now on, please be more judicious with the timing of your food porn posts. :woohoo:

Be well Mark. -
you could lay them flat
or like Randy's. here is 2 racks on the large with a few tossed on top. 38 whole wings/ 76 pieces with room for more.

Good Lord! I sure hope the mothership is paying you a commission for that line up Kent, your really slaying us out here. Did I mention that I am available for adoption and am willing to wash dishes from here to eternity?
Hope your feeling great these day Kent.
zapdafish, I have a medium and am single, if you are cooking for more than one or two I would go with the large BGE, the extra real estate on the grilling surface will be appreciated.

Dang GG - Dats a lot great groceries
Two levels on a small
You can make your own stackable grids by simply using some nuts and bolts
Two levels on an XL using nuts and bolts
I you take out the fire ring on the medium, you can get at least three levels and maybe four if planned correctly even with the platesetter. Without the fire ring you will still have plenty lump for a wing cook.
J-Lo has a medium and I would bet he has done to multiple levels. Maybe he will chime in. -
Thanks for all those delicious looking pics, sure am glad I dont have a scracth and sniff screen or I'd be dying here.
This weekend I'll be visiting my parents and luckily there is a dealer there with a decent inventory so I can actually see the sizes in person to help me make up my mind. -
Sorry to be a little late with this, after GG's post I had to go get something to eat [and drink]
Here is another option for multiple levels. It is the three tier rack for the large. Only two tiers are in place in this pic and you can see it will hold a lot of wings. At about $50 it is one of their better accesories IMHO

I have a medium, it was my first. I was cooking for me and my son, and entertaining. I've also used it with 2 and a half levels. My old bullet weber smoker grills will fit in with bolts perfect. Just haven't done it yet.
Here is my new medium that I am selling. This gives you a visualof 2.5 levels. The second grill has colapsable legs. Lid closes just fine. That is alot of grill space! Also, the fire ring is still in there.
Where are you located?
How many are you cooking for usually?Molly
