I read through a series of posts regarding "go to lump" - what are Canucks using for lump?

I use Maple Leaf.
What city / province are you in? Some of us in the GTA try to get try to get together and bulk buy.
I've heard about Basques and I'd like to try it but I can't find a place to buy it retail. Some of the local restaurants use it.

I live just outside of Ayr(Cambridge). I am in GTA regularly so that might work. Got 2 bags from dealer - BGE and Maple Leaf. Tried the BGE brand on my 1st cook yesterday and I will be interested in tasting/seeing the difference. What have you found? Rob
-
Ditto on the Royal Oak from Crappy Tire.I'm ashamed of what I did for a Klondike Bar.
-
Rob,
You will find the Maple Leaf better. I am going to see about getting a pallet or two delivered to my shop in Brampton. I'll call tomorrow and let you know what it will be.

I use Royal Oak from Crappy Tire or Walmart who recently had a nice sale on the smaller bags, $6.49. I also use Maple Leaf from Rona and sometimes I get Kingsford lump from Food Basics when it goes on sale, last winter it was $4.99 a bag for the small.
Occasionally I go to Ontario Gas BBQ when I want to try something different. Dickson Home Hardware also carries a good selection of lump. Most Home Hardware stores have a BBQ section. Check your local store. -
What's the difference between GBE and Maple Leaf?
-
dragons breath is my favorite. Ive done a lot of slow cooks and it burns for a long time. Also can get it to very hot for the steak sear. I've also used basques (a lot of small pieces), bge (works fine but seem to go through it quickly), and weekend warrior (good big pieces, would try again). Never really noticed a lot of difference in taste but i also use smoking chunks a lot. Bought them all at bbqs.com (ontario gas bbq). Wood Chunks at http://www.smokinlicious.ca/ (they deliver and shipping isnt much).

BGE is made by Royal Oak. It sparks and spits like crazy when you light it. I use a mapp torch and put safety glasses on when I light it. Aside from being ridiculously expansive, the white smoke does't dissapear for 15 minutes. Maple Leaf has a lot of maple and birch and lights great. It imparts a nice maple flavour.

Just purchased 72 bags from Nella Cutlery $12.25/ bag.
single bags are only $14.50.
Oh Yeh its Maple Leaf which in my opinion is the best.

Is that a pallet? Are you going to sell any. I need about 36 to get me through the winter. I'm happy to grab a pallet for myself and order two. Let other guys have it at the same price but I really don't need two.

Sorry, no can do.
I have already split it up with others folks.
and yes it is a pallet, you may want them to deliver to your warehouse as it is one honkin big pallet.
4ft x 4 ft x 7 ft.
it is still a good deal at $14 buying singles as home hardware is Almost $20.00

Forgive me for silly question - I am new remember. Do you ever cook on a stove/oven?

Pretty rare man. The egg works like a champ in the winter. Even if I'm doing a simple stew or chili I'll usually fire it up. It's like a ray of summer sun in our bleak winters. Lump does get scarce.

Fregg,
I have been buying from Nella for years. My local butcher usually has it year round but he has switched to Dragon Breath. No problem with the pallets or the space.

Thanks for the info. Based on responses I would be interested in taking part of a skid of Maple Leaf - maybe 20-25 bags.

Ok,
I'll call tomorrow. RGBHV, Canugghead and a few others can make it a pallet. Middle of winter I can raise the price  We are just off #410 south of Clark. That OK for you?

Can I get in on this one? -
Hi Steve:
$14.00 bag - man that's steep!
Count me in for 15 bags - I don't have room for any more than that. If you still have a bunch of bags in your warehouse after X-mas, I'll probably take a few more off your hands.
Talk to you later!

Steve, thanks for thinking of me but I'm good for a while; still have 25 assorted bags (mostly ML) and I egg on weekends only

I've been using Basque for a while now and get it from Sobie's in North York/Willowdale for $20 before that idiotic HST.
