I have had my butts on since 10 p.m. Temp between 200-250* all night. I wake up this morning and my thermometer is jumping from 172* down to 54* to 136* to 180* Is that what they do when the go out? Hubby in route to get another one, but just curious as to whether that is what they do when going out. Thanks in advance.

Are you referring to the BGE dome unit? or a hand held unit?Kent Madison MS

Eggdicted, I assume you are referring to the meat probe. Have you moved the probe to a new location. Is it possible it's in a layer of fat.

I have a Maverick ET-73 and it has never done that.
I assume you don't have a theremapen. Tim -
I have had cheap probe thermometers go bad and they do indeed jump all over the place. I have since upgraded to thermapen and it's well worth it. Also check your battery, I have had sporadic readings when the battery was almost dead. Popped in a fresh one and all was back to stable readings. Good luck

Sorry! Handheld. It seems to have stablized now for some really strange reason...

I do not have a thermapen. Can you enlighten me on what that is? I appreciate your help.

I'd guess a loose connection at the battery or internal OR low battery... test for accuracy in boiling water?Kent Madison MS

Will do. THANK YOU very much for the input!

New one is reading like old one...within a 1.5 degrees. I am going with loose connection Now on to ribs!....

An instant read thermometer. My go to for the final say. Tim
