Tel-Tru Thermometers

I've been thinking that one of my original dome thermometers isn't working as it should. It seems to lock up, so to speak, at about 300 degrees....just kind of sits there.

Then, all of a sudden, it will "release", and shoot up past 400 degrees. I've tested my other original thermometer, and it seems to travel smoothly through 300 degrees, making it easier to hit a target temp of 350, for example.

I guess my real question is, are the Tel-Tru thermometers that much better than the BGE's that ship with the grills?

i replaced my originals after about a year.. i wanted the 1000° and the oem was not working well... my tel-tru's work flawlessly. they sit out uncovered. the large exposed to the rain and snow.. no condensation and calibration was off only once.
in fact i just drilled a whole in the neigbors kettle smoker and put the bge thermometer in it,

I replaced my original with a Teltrue after only 2 weeks cause it was off by 70 degrees. Works great and I think I only paid 13 bucks for it.

Not sure I'd say they're 'better', but I have two of them, and they've both been working well for the year I had them. I got one for each of my Eggs, and did one of the 1000 degree model, and one of the 750 degree models. My BGE thermometer was working fine too ... until I accidently bent the stem while loading the Egg into my truck, hence the replacement.

Can't really go wrong for the price.

I really enjoy mine. I also like the larger face of the thermometer making it easier to see. The scaling is a bit different than the BGE one so it will require a little adjustment there, but it is an excellent thermometer so far. Not quite a year old yet.

Yes, they are much better. I've had 6 BGE thermometers and they have all eventually failed. All my Tel-Tru models are doing just fine. When you go to purchase, remember the 2.5" stem will read about 12-15% low because the stem doesn't extend far enough into the cooker. You can adjust for this in your head. Good luck!

MakoBBQ, Be sure you know that the Tel-Tru thermometers stick in the dome more than the BGE thermometers so you need to put the clip on the out side and always be aware so you don't bend them. Tim

Thanks for the heads up. Before I ordered I went out and looked at my BGE thermometers. They are just over 3 inches. I was concerned as sometimes if I'm cooking a turkey or multiple levels of butts the thermometer can pierce the meat. Will keep your advise in mind.

So they don't make one the same length as the BGE ones ?
I would rather not have to "adjust in my head". (Sometimes adult beverages come into play)

I don't like the idea of using a longer one with the clip on the outside either....that would look kinda tacky, IMO.

I use the longer stem models on both my Eggs. Put the clip on the inside of the dome and use a wine bottle cork as a spacer on the outside. Just drill through lengthwise and insert the stem through. Works great and I seem to have a nearly endless supply of "spacers!"

They have 2.5" and 5" stem models. Some people get the shorter stem so they don't have to worry so much about the probe sticking into the food if it is very high up in the cooker.
