I literally just bought an et-73 last night to get ready for a butt cook this weekend. Are they pretty easy to use? Do you reccomend them?
-
I like it, because it reads both cooker and meat temp. I would suggest a secondary thermometer to verify the meat is done though. ET-73 shows my butt is now 210*, 2 other thermometers show 185ish.

Last weekend we did two slow cooks, in both cases the ET-73 indicated the meat was at 190* and the thermapen read 8* lower. Didn't know which to believe, but went with the thermapen and cooked until it read the desired temp. Based on this thread, sounds like there may be a real difference between the two thermometers.

I don't think there is any other product frequently discussed here that has more of a love/hate opinion than the ET-73. Some swear by them & some don't trust them. I gave up trusting mine years ago and haven't used it since.Re-gasketing America one yard at a time.

Amen to RRP.
Used mine for two cooks before it took a dump. Took it back and got a refund and put the money in a stoker.
Don't bother with ET-73's.
Send the ET's home.
If it comes down to a reading on the et or the thermapen, take the thermapen every time. -
One could easily be in a fat pocket and the other not which will give wildly different readings. Ever wonder how seals can swim and live in 32 degree water without freezing...fat!

Like I said yesterday, Brokersmoker, you can clear up which one is right by dunking them in ice water and boiling water.
