Memphis BBQ Question - Paynes BBQ

Spring Hen has been wanting me to take her to Memphis so she can experience the Elvis tour. You know, walk where he walked, talk where he talked, etc. She wants to jump in the truck and go ASAP but I'm a Taurus and that's not my style. I have to plan stuff a little better.

For example, we've read reviews and posts on most of the talked about BBQ restaurants in Memphis and it seems that not everyone cares for the BBQ now that those places are successful. In fact, some reviews are downright nasty.

But we were watching Best Food I Ever Ate tonight and there was this BBQ restaurant that I haven't heard of before.

Paynes BBQ (2 locations) and this is one of their favorites.

Anybody ever eat there or had one of their pork sandwiches? They cook a pork shoulder for about 12 hours then chop it up. I can't remember what else they put in with it but it looked and sounded delicious. They use a vinegar based sauce.

The reviews say it's a Memphis Institution. But so are all the others.

Haven't ate at Paynes, but definitely hit up Gus's fried chicken. Delicious doesn't begin to describe it.

If it was REALLY good, me thinks you would have remembered. Maybe they got better since then.

I'm not real big into fried chicken right now, now with my ticker going tick, tick, tick, instead of tickety, tickety, tickety. Know what I mean.

I used to work in Memphis and my favorites were Central BBQ and Germantown Commissary. Both places fill up with locals and in my opinion the best in town. Always consistent which I didn't find in the others.

Never mind... I've been reading some reviews and it looks like the place is not on the shopping list for us.

I might just take some of my own and buy some buns when we get there to eat in the hotel room.

Thanks, RT, I'm going to be spending a lot of time about an hour from Memphis for the next few months, and I'm sure I'll get tired of the local fare and head over to Gus's.

Maybe I should just take Spring Hen to an Elvis movie here and take the long way around Memphis. I don't want to have to break out my culinary skills to defend myself LOL...

But if we do find ourself headed in that direction we sure might ask for HELP :ermm:

    Leroy,
Not sure how you would travel from Spring to Memphis, but it is likely you would pass through Jackson ( and Madison).
If you do come this way, give me a day's notice or so and I will try to coordinate a lunch, a visit or even an overnight stay if you need. The Madison branch of the ranch welcomes the Spring fowl family any time! :woohoo:

Might even scratch up some adult beverages .....
