Grill Extenders

So I am probably just too cautious to try anything by myself, but is there a guide (or anyone care to list a how to) to building your own extender to have a second level on a large egg?

Go to home improvement store, purchase a couple of fire bricks and a replacement grill...done!

My first time cooking at the Texas Eggfest.
Found two pieces of broken brick.
Far from a SS Rig but it worked in a pinch.
Having a few fire bricks around is never a bad thing.

For a Large:
18" dia replacement grid
(3) 3/8" x 4" to 4.1/2" carriage bolts
(6) ea. nuts and washers

doesn't have to be SS hardware, mine is zinc coated/plated. With a smaller grid, you can get longer bolts, getting the food higher in the egg (watch out for the thermometer if you do this)

Use (3) "legs" and your grid will never wobble

For a Mini:
I ordered an extra grid with my mini. the hardware is shown on the sketch (again, go with 3 legs)

Thanks for the replies...Flashback with that setup do you attach the legs to the original grid or does it just stay put?

Also hearing about eh eggfests got me thinking how do you go about getting into these? Is it just bring an egg and show up...or are there registration steps?

The grids I have made sit on the main grid.

The size of the nuts on the mini don't require a washer, where the ones I used for the large have a washer at the bottom, sandwiched in place between (2) nuts. On the large setup, I turned the nuts so they fit between the bars of the grid when setting it in place.

Is it wrong that just thinking about this makes my mouth water?

I am already imagining doing 30lbs of BBQ...and i have no idea when I would even have a party for people to eat it. :woohoo:

It sounds like most of the replies mentioned using fasteners..... for that style of extended grate, here is the most complete write-up I know of. And it was put together by one of the better cooks I know of.Old Dave's Contraption

In the last 10 or 12 years the contraption has spawned a variety of similar styles. The use of fire bricks like fishlessman showed works well too.
