Well worth the $10.
This Purple Basil "bush" started as a small plant 5 years ago and grew to be 5 feet across and 3 ft tall. stalk was 3/4 inch dia. Had it not been for a freeze this spring "in Florida", it would still be going strong. Did save the wood and it is great for smoking.

looks a whole lot like the new variety from Burpee's that i planted this year.. called "summerlong"
i noticed the other day that the stem was beginning to look more like a trunk i will get some pics after work.

Start pickin'. Perhaps move it into a larger sized pot and let that get established and it should overwinter fine indoors. That and don't let it go to flower.

humidity is my problem, the lack of it. the soft leaved plants dont seem to fair well. even with a big humidifier in the kitchen where it will be kept, the heating system, coal, dries the place out badly. will be transferring to a bigger pot though, that ones way too small.fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

Keep a spray mister bottle handy and good luck.

It's just regular ole Sweet Basil. That's the way they grow down here. Mine is going to seed, which I will save some in the freezer for next spring.

how do you guys freeze it for winter??? thanks! ray

pick the leaves off and put them in a zip loc bag. Do not wash the leaves! Place the bags in the freezer. Take out as many leaves as you need and then wash them to refresh. Leave the remaining frozen.

ziplock and freeze. it turns black but the flavor is still there, use for dark sauces and nobody knows better.fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it
