Do you have a VA in your city? My VA (Houston) has quite a few PA's in their primary care clinics.

    Gary,
Actually we have one it St. Pete by me and an outpatient clinic by my daughter. I talked to a friend that works at the VA and he told me they have several there. She will be calling them to see if she can hang out for a day and really see what goes on and talk to one. We talked to a friend of mine who is a doctor today and he told her a bit about it. He was very positive. I know we have so many people on this forum and a great place to learn about anything. I figured we would have one or two she might be able to talk to. You are right on target with the VA. After she decides this will be something for her, she will start some volunteer work at the VA if possible. She is in her last year of college. She enjoys psychology, and heard the VA uses them in their mental health dept. Two years ago we went fishing on a party boat. Most of the guys fishing were recent vets not much older than her. They were escorted by older Viet Nam vets. The young guys were in wheel chairs and some with prosthetics. She had a opportunity of a lifetime getting to talk in depth with a few. With her liking of physiology and her beginning interest in the PA program, it can turn out to be a great thing.

My wife is a PA. I am really glad she went that route instead of medical school. PA school is a very rigorous program. It is basically 1st and 3rd years of med school packed into a shorter amount of time. Salary can range from the low end of 60,000 to well over 100,000. A PA can basically do anything that her physician will let them.

It really is a tough program. Most PA schools want their applicants to have some sort of medical experience. There was only one or two out of about 100 that was accepted right out of undergrad in my wife's class.

What I really like about it is she can work part time. We have two kids now, and she doesn't have to worry about a lot of the headaches a physician does.

There might be some more PA's here, but if you have any questions, let me know.

Thanks Chappy. I will send this link to my daughter. If this is the course she takes, she will need to probably take a few extra courses and start some hospital work.

Sounds awesome. We've got PA's and Nurse Practitioner's aplenty up here. There is a school local too.

Hey Pat. The baby is doing great. THe new house is about a month and a half away from being done. We are going to wait until after the new year to do the pool. I had them move the main water line because it was going right where the pool should go, so hopefully later it will be a lot easier when I have you guys start.

Gary, another thing I forgot to mention is that unlike an MD, a PA can change specialties very easily. My wife likes surgery and has done general and vascular, but it is long hours. She is thinking about dermatology now as it would be easier part time and better hours as we have two kids under two years old.
