That middle of the night grate tapping...

Any suggestions on how to keep the grate from clogging up with ashes. Seems to be a problem here in freakin' humid Iowa this summer---even with BBQ Guru! I've tried the Elder Ward thing of large pieces of lump at the bottom. During the last couple of weeks I had some overnight cooks going. On a trip to the bathroom, I happened to peak outside and saw the guru flashing and heard the fan blowing a lot. Went out, poked at the grate and all was fine. If I didn't have a weak bladder I'm sure the fire would have gone out. Any suggestions?
Not for the weak bladder.....just the fire problem now please.

Any way around having to use a tapper/wiggler at all?

I've seen some add 3-4 small bolts to the fire grate to lift it off the fire box 1/4-3/8 or so. I would think that would help a bunch. What lump are you using? -
I'm using BGE lump. Thanks for your suggestion. Sounds promising.
-
What part of Iowa are you in?
-
I swear by Wicked Good lump these days. The large pieces are 3-4 times larger than the BGE large pieces. Much more dense as well. My last 10 overnight cooks have not been touched, and I don't use a DigiQ at all. Just the remote therm, but again, I haven't had to touch it.

I seem to recall reading that some guys cut a piece of expanded metal to replace the grate. lots more airflow and less chance of clogging. doubt those last too long though.
I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

are you putting it in with the bevels down, if not it acts to catch ash. the three bolts mentioned help, what you want to do is put them on the outer edge with a big washer that extends outside the circumference, the grate will sit on the washer and leave a good air gap all around it.fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

Right smack dab in the middle: Des Moines!
And where in Minnesota are you? -
Bevels!!! DOWN! Crap! I bet that's what I messed up.
Thanks!! -
Bloomington. Your the halfway point to my folks' house in Arkansas. I have family in Charles City and used to chase Roosters all over the north side of the state, back when the populations were higher. Do you see Quail or Partridge in your area?
-
Saw some quail on the menu at a restaurant last week!
A friend owns a farm south of here. Huge quail and pheasant populations. He's not a hunter. Me neither.
Family in ChuckTown! I lived up in those parts years ago. Nasty winters. Even worse than Bloomington but not as bad as freakin' Fergus Falls. -
Use a wiggle rod in the lower vent up through the holes in the grate to clear any ash from as many holes as you can...doing this right before you go to bed usually keeps things clear enough to easily make it through the night...
-
I would change my lump and keep it in doors. The humitity would make it hard to start/high temps, but not cause clogging.

Sounds like some population control is needed. :P

That's odd. I've never had a hard time doing and overnight, and I don't even have a guru. I am in the desert and use Royal oak - in case that makes a difference.
Putting on a big 'ol boston butt tonight for a Fiesta party on Friday. I plan to set it up around 6pm tonight and not look at it (well, maybe I'll take a peak before I go to bed) - I've never had a problem. First time for everything though. -
I use a turbo grate and never had a problem. There was a discussion about it awhile back and the consensuses was no one liked it but me.

I had to go after leaving you that link. It looks like you got a lot of great suggestions. Wish you well on your next cook and don't forget to flip your grate bevel side down. Tim
