Thermapen vs. Reliability

I really don't want to plunk down the $$$ for a thermapen, but its better than plunking down $12 or so for a Polder which seems to give up after only a few meals.

Are Thermapens built to last, assuming that I take reasonable care of it?

I'm on my 5th year. One issue and sent it back for repair.
They fixed it for free and it was in shop and back to me in one week.
Super customer service.
Money well spent for the quality.

You answered your own post stating that all others fail after a short period. Yes I too wish I had back the money I spent on the first 7 thermometers.

When I first bought one it would read very slowly...15-20 seconds, while my arm hair smoldered. Posters kept mentioning the lightning-fast speed of these things and I finaly inquired if this was some kind of a forum joke.
To (sort of) wrap this up, I sent my thermapen back to Thermoworks. They cared not that I had no receipt and had neglected to fill out my warranty card. They sent back my now whiz-bang fast pen in about a week, at no cost to me. I like the thermapen so much now that I've purchased a few more and they have all worked properly from the git-go. And...I have arm hair again....

9 years here on my first one after I too gagged at the cost, but I won't be without one again! OTOH I have already bought my second one, so I guess that might be a testimonial of sorts! The older one is my favorite, but my newer one is the waterproof one "in case I get stupid" some night and leave it out!

I liked mine so well that I bought 2 spares just in case they didn't last. I took one to our "White Elephant Christmas" party (or what ever they call those things) and it went around to the last lucky shooter. Still have the other one in it's original package, just in case. Several years now and I don't take real good care of it, don't know how many times it's been left by the pit after too many adult beverages but it keeps on ticking.

I have 2 nine year old thermapens that are going strong.
Yeah, they are expensive but will pay for themselves many times over in perfectly cooked meat and looking like a pro in front of your guests.

They are also very good at instantly checking air temp to show that yes you are, indeed, miserable.
