Before I start my fire for my pork butt, do I use the Digi II right from the start or wait until the coals are burning and then use the Digi II

That is up to you. However, I usually let my eggs get close to 200 before putting the Guru's on my eggs.

Thanks Buddy!!

How you doing Pete I ain't heard from you since between now and yesterday.
-
I usually put mine on right away to help start the coals and regulate the fire but it's up to u like celtic said. he is alot more eggsperienced than I
-
I wait until it gets going so the Guru doesn't accidentally choke off your fire when it senses the starter cube/paper towel/etc. (Voice of experience here )

I am doing OK. Sleep lot, took a well deserved and requested shower, and just vegged out today

I wait..think "blast furnace" here....if you let that thing blow right from the get go, once it reaches set temp there will be so much burning lump that it IS going to overshoot the set temp..no sense in getting more burning than you need, plus it will burn longer by not unnecessarily burning it up at the start..

Showers are good. Resting all day i'm sure you deserve.

I use the Digi Q II right from the start.
You still get natural draft even when the fan does not run.
I close the Digi Q damper in as required to control temp.
The damper is usually 1/2 open on the Digi Q & fan cycles on & off .
If the fan stays off too long I close the damper a little more .
I am running a large egg & a 10 CFM Fan. -
I did take your advice and appreciate it very much

I put my digi q on as soon as I add the started coals from my chimney to the firebox. So far I haven't been able to mess anything up.
