A friend broke his band bolt yesterday. What size does he need to replace the large band bolt please?

Hey Tom, I do believe it's a 5/16x2. But you can always take your broken bolt to the hardware store and get it sized. Tim

Good idea except he threw it out. haha

I have two large eggs and one has smaller bolt in the bands and thats the first time I noticed that. I have the bolt size written down that's how I know plus I went out there with a tape and checked to be on the safe side. Maybe someone else will chime in.

2Fategghead is right. It is a 5/16" x 2" carriage bolt. Get a couple extra for future use.

Hopefully they will. I know I have a couple extras here somewhere, but darned if I can find where I put them. When he called I said, "I have one, just toss it & I will bring it to you." DOH

Thanks

You could always remove the band bolt that isn't broken and take it in to the hardware store.....buy two new ones and replace both.
Novel idea, eh?
Just don't do stainless nuts and bolts. They will strip the square hole on the band before they will bend when you tighten them. Don't ask me how I know such things, just accept that I do. -
Tom, be sure to have him measure the length (if he has one left). They did change slightly in style and length over time. Tim is right about the current bolt. I had to buy one that was 4" to fit an older style egg that has a slightly larger outside diameter.

Expreience is everything, eh Rod? :woohoo:

What about bolt grades? I can't seem to find the grade 5 that came with my egg. Think it matters?

A standard 5/16x2" galvanized carriage bolt should work fine
