Thinking about getting a Tel-Tru. I'm leaning towards the 150/750 as I do more cooks at low temps. Any thoughts? Do most folks go with the 200/1000? What happens if I go over 750? Will it damage the thermometer? Thanks in advance.

i would go with the 200-1000 .. a couple of drinks and you're up at 700 and some where in the fine print it says not to use the thermometer near its max rated value for extended periods.. you may want to do an occasional pizza as well -

go with the higher rated one,, somewhere in the fine print it says not to use near the max temp for expended periods.. you may want to do pizza etc and a couple of drinks and before you know it the egg is at 750 -

Nothing will be harmed. The dial will simply continue to climb off the listed chart. I put the short stem and high temp ones on the smaller eggs and the 5" stem and the lower range temps on the large. I recently had the tel trus, thermapen and Maverick in the same pot of boiling water. All reading 210-211 None of them have been adjusted by me, 100% factory calibrated.

This is where I bought my three. Great people to deal with and I would buy from them again without a second thought.

These thermometers can indeed be damaged if you take them too high. The 1000 degree model has a warning on it that you should only take it over 800 for short periods of time. The Naked Whiz

It depends how high and how long, but yes, you can damage one of these thermometers by going too high. I'd get one of each. See the following for information about stem length:

Not a problem. I can't get my eggs over 700° anyway. Seriously. But since I'm not running a steel mill, I'm ok with that.
I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Thanks for the responses -- sounds like getting both is the way to go....but I'd like to not drop $40 on thermometers. Maybe I'll go in stages....
